The Eternal Soul

Late Shri Kamini Kanta Patnaik, a man of high repute needs no introduction to the people of Odisha, especially to the techies groomed in the city of temples since 1986 onwards. He was an elegant personality with a great foresight, i.e. VISION and a MISSION to accomplish, truly a living legend of his times. Late Shri Patnaik was an inspirational figure as well as an institution in himself. The ‘K’ factor influenced and motivated not only the middle aged people but also the youth to vanquish all hurdles in order to achieve their goals in style by thinking and implementing their thoughts differently.

The great visionary was born on 1st March 1921 in the village called Muruda, in the district of Mayurbhanj, in the state of Odisha. After having had pursued his higher education Late Shri K. K. Patnaik served the Odisha High Court followed by the West Bengal High Court and the esteemed Supreme Court of India as a renowned Lawyer by profession. I am also very happy and proud to mention that Late Shri Patnaik was the Legal Adviser as well as the close associate of Hon’ble former Chief Minister of Odisha (‘Odishara Baraputra’) late Shri Biju Patnaik.

Late Shri K. K. Patnaik showed a chivalric character by daring to dream & establish the premier Technical / Professional Education College while the same concept was never imagined during that time way back in 1986. With all his efforts Orissa Engineering College (OEC) under the banner of Nabajyoti Charitable Trust was established in the Odisha State capital, which was adjudged to be the first of its kind (in the private venture) in the entire Eastern India. His aims were to create an institution which stands for quality technical education, to facilitate the increase in the knowledge base of students & faculty, to bring about all-round development in the personality of students & faculty, to promote research temperament and to create highly enthusiastic & successful Entrepreneurs. Later in 2001 the visionary again came up with an idea of establishing Centre for Management Studies (CMS-OEC) to excel in the field of Management. His intentions were very clear from the beginning to groom Global Managers to meet global challenges retaining uniqueness in blending theoretical inputs with practical insights.

Late Shri Patnaik resembled a huge Banyan tree giving shelter, shade, bread & butter to the enormous family members of OEC. The blessings of this great soul has made it possible to place the techies passed out from OEC all over the globe for 25 years and continuing to do so even after celebrating its Silver Jubilee. He left no stone unturned with his untiring efforts to make sure quality technical education being provided to students in & out of the large 50 acres spread college campus. The stalwart with his hand - picked team & perseverance made sincere and fruitful strenuous work in rising from pillar to post, and inspected personally each nook & corner of the esteemed institution grow from its infancy to maturity within a time frame. He was a very down-to-earth person who earned respect by cherishing and encouraging even the minute contribution of his employees for the development of the institution. His slogan was “The institution is always above individual”, so he sometimes gently patted the shoulders of his employees as a gesture that the concerned person’s work is recognized. How can I forget to mention that when this great soul visited the OEC campus during the tech-cum-cultural fest Zazen & Zephyr – 2011 acknowledged the regards of his employees with folded hands while taking a tour in his favourite Blue coloured Skoda Octavia around the college campus. Perhaps nobody expected that, that could be his last official visit to his dream-holy institution because he was very strong and stout mentally even though he was running 90+ of age. The best part of his life style was that he was accustomed to stay in jolly mood even during stringent situations. He was very much fond of playing cards and adored to outplay his family members while playing the same.

During the first week of July 2011 his health started deteriorating and he was admitted into the Apollo Hospital, Bhubaneswar. Even there in the Hospital bed in his cabin he used to enquire about the progress of the college. He was a real warrior but the Almighty had decided something else for him. Late Shri Kamini Kanta Patnaik took his last breath and set himself for the journey to Heaven on the most auspicious day of Lord Jagannath’s ‘Bahuda Yatra’ on 11th July 2011. The hearts of people who loved this great man were bewildered and shattered after listening the news of his sad demise. Folks started rushing to the hospital to have a glimpse of the great personality and pay their homage to the departed soul.

Although our beloved Kamini Sir, Founder Nabajyoti Charitable Trust and Founder President Governing Body of Orissa Engineering College is not physically present amongst us, we can very much feel the presence of his eternal soul in each & every sphere of the OEC campus. He was, is, and will remain as the torch bearer for the family members of OEC showing us the right path for the prosperity of this great professional institution by rendering his grace forever. Last but not the least I would sincerely like to pay my tributes to Kamini Sir by praying God to rest our beloved Sir’s divine soul in peace.
